Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino recently announced that international students who didn’t receive Canadian job experience due to the COVID-19 pandemic would be given a second chance at permanent residence requirements.
Ottawa is launching a temporary policy to grant students from abroad that have an expired or soon-to-expire post-graduate Canadian work permit to apply for an 18-month permit. The students who graduate from a university or post-secondary college in Canada, approved by the government, are eligible for a work permit that is good for one to three years, depending upon the duration of their educational programs.

Education credentials from Canada and work experience are increasingly critical for foreign nationals trying to apply for permanent residence in the country. The applicants are rewarded with bonus points for their Canadian education and/or work experience in the immigrant-selection process. Close to 60,000 international students who graduated from a designated Canadian educational institution in 2019 were successful when applying to immigrate to Canada permanently.
However, the pandemic caused a less than robust job market for the 2020 cohort and many were let go from their jobs in Canada. The new policy guarantees international students a chance to stay and find work and ensures a good economy today and tomorrow in Canada.
