Invest Ottawa has designed a database of tech workers who have over five years of experience and have a connection to the city. The connection may be through family, where they attended school, or their career has led them there. The database includes over 12,400 people who are available for recruitment.
A virtual event with potential hires was geared toward 5G software engineers and five companies, including Ericsson. Invest Ottawa is highlighting a test center for autonomous vehicles, cars, trucks, drones, and farm equipment, and other technology from cloud computing to cybersecurity to show potential investors and recruits.
The head of the Waterloo Economic Development Corporation said location is important, especially for firms whose work is linked to physical products. He said you can’t use an ecosystem to your benefit if you are remote. For example, an auto tech at a local company wants to be a part of the supply chain in the region.
The Quebec government now offers various tax credits to lure tech firms to the region. They allow up to $25,000 per worker annually for “e-businesses,” but the staff must work in Quebec for employees to enjoy the benefits. It makes it more difficult for them to have a small presence in the province and have most of their staff in Seattle or another location. There are various visa options for you to choose from.
